It doesn’t matter if it’s your sweat or a friends sweat that has left your fitness equipment marked with stains, your machines and free weights should be disinfected after each workout session. We’re Midland’s leading fitness machine providers, and we’re here to give you some tips on types of solutions you can purchase or make at home that will thoroughly clean and kill whatever bacteria has built up from the use of your equipment.

Vinegar and Water

Vinegar can be used to clean pretty much anything, and fitness equipment is one. Mix a 50/50 solution of white vinegar and water in a trigger spray bottle. Mix it well before use, and spray it directly on the equipment. Then, wipe the equipment dry with a paper towel or rag. If you don’t have a home gym, but you visit a local one, it may be in your best interest to keep your own small spray bottle of the mixture on hand to be sure the fitness equipment you use is sanitized.

Borax Solution

Mix two tablespoons of borax solution with a quarter cup of lemon juice in a trigger spray bottle, then add two cups of hot water. Mix well before use. Spray directly onto your used equipment and wipe clean with a cloth or paper towel. Take note that a pump spray bottle may not work well because borax solution has been known to clog a smaller spray opening. However, an adjustable trigger spray bottle tends to work great.

Wet Wipes

Who says wet wipes are only to be used for baby’s bottoms? Purchase disposable wet wipes and keep a package in your gym bag or next to your equipment in your home gym. If you don’t want to make a solution, this is an easy way to keep your equipment clean before and after each use. Believe it or not, baby wipes are extremely effective and cheap for wiping down fitness equipment.

Towels

Although we highly suggest you use a disinfectant, a rag works well to wipe sweat dry. If you do decide to only wipe down your equipment with a towel, be sure you at least disinfect your machines and equipment after a few days of use to keep bacteria growth low.
