Do you need a break from the gym life? Are you looking for a creative way to lose weight this weekend? The truth of the matter is that there is literally an infinite number of ways to get your exercise, and only a small portion of them involve paying for a gym membership and going to a room full of sweaty people! In this blog, we’re going to talk about several creative ways you can get your exercise and maybe even develop some new skills in the process.

Sword Fighting

Yep, that’s right, we’re starting off strong! And man is this a good one! In fact, the idea of sword fighting as a form of weight loss is what gave me the idea for this blog. There are so many forms of sword fighting out there and surprisingly, there a lot of groups that would be willing to teach you how it’s done. Not only is sword fighting a great cardio exercise, but you’ll be learning how to be agile, gaining strength from swinging a sword, and improving your reaction times as you attempt to block, parry, dodge, and riposte each attack.

Have no fear! Modern sword fighting is a sport, and it’s been made rather safe due to the use of padding and armor. If you join a reputable sword fighting league, you’ll be under the supervision of people who have been doing this for quite some time.

Martial Arts

Okay, technically sword fighting is a form of martial arts, but I’m more referring to the unarmed variety with this one, i.e. kickboxing, Taekwondo, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Karate, etc. Where sword fighting is more focused on learning sword techniques, these martial arts forms are focused on mastering the use of your body. The same rules apply when it comes to safety; if you join a reputable league or practice on your own, it’s a relatively safe sport to practice. However, if your fights aren’t managed by a professional, you may be at a higher risk of injury.

Rock Climbing

Rock climbing and bouldering are very physically demanding sports. Many of the great rock climbers out there won’t do any other form of exercise because the sport within itself is basically a full-body workout. If you don’t have any great mountains to climb near you, try to either find a rock climbing wall near you or go bouldering somewhere. It should be noted that rock climbing can also be very dangerous, so make sure you go with someone you trust, preferably someone who’s experienced in rock climbing.

Are you ready to start getting exercise in a fun way? Paying for a gym membership every month can be acceptable for a while, but soon you’ll get tired of dealing with the cost and the crowds. So why not start your own in-home gym instead? Sure, there’s a larger initial investment, but over time, you’ll save hundreds and have a much more convenient way of working out.
